Where is Plum Island?
Plum Island is a fifty - five acre uninhabited island in the Illinois River located just down stream from Starved Rock Dam visible from Starved Rock State Park.
Why is it important?
The wintering Bald Eagle population of the Illinois River Valley uses Plum
Island as one of its strongholds. In the winter of 2001, 83 eagles were
counted in the area. The island is an important historic location, well
known for its Native American village and burial site. The waters
surrounding the island are a prime spawning area for walleye and sauger.
These are fish that the Bald Eagle feed on. The majestic views from the
bluffs are one of the prime attractions of Starved Rock State Park.
Is it in danger?
Most of Plum Island is privately owned. It does not have any legal
protection as a nature preserve. An Orland Park developer has discussed a
variety of projects - most recently, a group of luxury town homes.
A Call to Action!
Friends of Plum Island are hosting a benefit concert at the Majestic Theatre
on Oct 19th and 20th, 2002 to raise funds to save Plum Island as a wildlife
habitat! Audition tapes / CDs are currently being accepted from artists
interested in participating in this event which will undoubtedly receive
state wide (possibly national) media attention! This event maybe taped and
recorded for future broadcast. If you are interested in participating in
this meaningful event send an e-mail to katie@majesticshows.com or phone
